Sumo in Japan

Professional sumo is one of the oldest continuous sporting traditions in the world, and seeing it live is unlike any other sporting event. The salt-throwing purification rituals, the stamping of feet to drive away evil spirits, the explosive clashes that sometimes last under a second. The lower divisions wrestling in a nearly empty arena at dawn. The top-ranked wrestlers entering to roaring crowds in the afternoon.

Tickets are notoriously difficult to obtain, especially for premium seating. We work well in advance to secure access and guide you through the full experience, from the sumo stew to the ceremony.

Tournament Schedule and Locations

Six honbasho (grand tournaments) per year, each lasting 15 days. January, May, and September are held at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo. March is in Osaka, July in Nagoya, and November in Fukuoka. Tickets for popular tournaments sell out within minutes of release.

Because of this scarcity, advance planning is essential. We recommend reaching out at least 8 to 12 weeks before your travel dates during tournament months. We cannot guarantee tickets for every tournament, but we have strong access and will be transparent about availability from the start.

What's Included

Personal guide throughout the experience. Ticket sourcing assistance (subject to availability). Cultural briefing on sumo history, rankings, and ceremony. In-venue food and drink guidance. Restaurant recommendations for chanko nabe and post-tournament dining.

Tickets, meals, and transit are at your cost (sourced and coordinated by your guide). Guide fee covers the guided experience itself. Ticket availability is not guaranteed due to the controlled nature of sumo tournament access.
